Facts:
The IST, created in 1911, is the largest and most reputed school of engineering, science and technology in Portugal. IST’s mission is to contribute to the development of society by promoting a higher education of outstanding quality in the areas of Engineering, Science and Technology, at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and by carrying out research and development activities in accordance with the highest international standards. Its mission thus reflects the three key activities of a modern research-oriented universities: Education, Research & Development and Links with Society. With two conveniently located campuses, (Alameda in Lisbon and Taguspark in Oeiras), IST consists of ten Departments responsible for teaching Undergraduate and Postgraduate Programmes. The Bologna process was implemented at IST in the 2006/2007 academic year. Nine study programmes were reorganized as 5-year integrated Master programmes. Twelve study programmes were restructured as two separate cycles (3-year Bachelor 2-year Master). IST offers PhD programmes in 20 different scientific areas. IST study programmes are attended by about than 10,000 students (about 1,000 MSc students and 600 Doctoral students). The study areas cover a wide range of scientific domains, including all the classic engineering domains as well as emergent topics as Biological Engineering, Aerospace and Physics Engineering.
